Working Together
A
few years ago the TRiO Student Support Services staff read
Who
Moved My Cheese.
It seemed that things were really changing then but wow, the cheese
continues to be moved.
As ABAC continues to grow, so does the TRiO Student Support Services
program. Our collaborative effort with the Office of Student Success to
ensure retention and graduation of ABAC students has prompted a physical
move. TRiO SSS and the Office of Student Success now reside on the first
floor of the Carlton Center.
Through our joint efforts, we hope to link students with the necessary
resources early so that academic success is attainable. The supportive,
friendly staffs of both programs look forward to sharing space in provide
tutoring, academic assistance and social opportunities to students.

Synergism
My mother, Thelma Carpenter Parks, was a teacher of English, Latin, and
French. Mrs. Parks was a true “live-long learner” who earned her college
degrees and started a career when most people are longing for retirement.
She instilled a love of language and learning in all of her children. As a
result, I have enjoyed a passionate love affair with words.
Synergism is defined as “cooperative action of discrete agencies such
that the total effect is greater than the sum of the two effects taken
independently”. This is a fancy way of saying that team work is better than
individual work. The Bible says “if one can put a thousand to flight, than
two can put ten thousand to flight.” I am told that two draft horses can
pull many times more that a single horse.
So what does this all have to do with the partnership of TRIO Student
Support Services and the Office of Student Success? Simply put, this
collaboration puts ABAC in the forefront of helping our students succeed.
Our TRIO program is one of the longest-standing and well-respected programs
in the United States. Our Office of Student Success is “green
and growing”. And finally, our state-of-the art “Student Success Center” at
the Commons is second to none.

The Perfect Toolbox
Now that we are approaching a new Fall Semester, it is time to get back into
the school mode. After all, whether we want to admit it or not, having the
tools needed to do well in school is like practicing for the real world.
Knowing how to manage your time, take notes effectively, and utilize
efficient study skills is just the beginning of a long list of tools a
student must use to “make the grade.” Of course, actually going to class
every day, being attentive to what the teacher says, and putting homework
and studying ahead of hanging out with friends (when you know you must) are
other things that can be done to make the most of your educational
opportunity.
Did you know that
the choices you make now are opportunities to jump start your career? By
being on time to class, asking questions to make sure you understand
important points, and showing respect to both professors and other
classmates, you are paving the way for an easier transition from college
life to the work world. When you begin your career, the same things are
important. Employers want employees to come to work on time, ask questions
if a work requirement is unclear, and show respect to those around you.
Employers will also expect you to manage your time wisely, write down (and
learn) important job responsibilities, and utilize effective educational
skills learned in school to do the best job possible.
Are you using all
the tools necessary to be successful? If you feel like you are,
congratulations to you! However, if you think you could improve your
toolbox, don’t fret. Student Support Services has workshops every semester
which are designed to help you do well in school (and beyond.)
Additionally, the office staff is here to help you improve and succeed at
meeting your goals and will meet with you on an individual basis to discuss
your needs. Whether you have no tools in your toolbox or have the wrong
ones, we can help you obtain the ones needed to be successful both here at
ABAC and in the work world. Come see us!
