Horse Operation Management
Division of Agriculture and Forest ResourcesPROGRAM OBJECTIVES:
Individuals completing this program will be better equipped for the daily management and operation of an equine facility. They will have acquired the basic skills to work with computer software programs designed around computer spreadsheet and word processing applications. Management activities needed for successful operation of small businesses will also be learned. The student will be able to implement practices needed for forage production and management. Individuals completing this program will be able to deal with horse management and production principles dealing with horse health care, horse selection and facilities design.

*These courses can be applied towards an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Agricultural Technology in Animal Science and also in Livestock Health.
CAREER OUTLOOK AND OPPORTUNITIES
Individuals completing these certificate programs will be better equipped for the daily management and operation of equine, beef or dairy operations. They will have acquired the basic skills to work with computer software programs designed around computer spreadsheet and word processing applications. Management activities needed for successful operation of the farm business will also be learned.
The student will be able to implement practices needed for forage production and management. Individuals completing the equine program will be able to deal with horse management and production principles dealing with horse health care, horse selection and facility design. Individuals completing the general animal industry certificate program will be able to deal with beef/dairy cattle management and production principles dealing with cattle health care, cattle nutrition, and reproductive management.
Many students will graduate from these certificate programs and return to their family ranch or farm more competent in the fundamentals of livestock production. Career opportunities are related to production of horses and cattle.
REPRESENTATIVE FIELDS OF EMPLOYMENT
Horse barn managers, Boarding stables manager, Beef Production Farm - assistant manager, herdsman, Dairy operation - calf or heifer management.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM
The equine certificate program and general animal industry management certificate program consists of two semesters of course work.
