Program Title:  General Family and Consumer Sciences

Credit Hours:               18

Program Objectives: 

Individuals completing this program will have a comprehensive understanding of all content areas of Family and Consumer Sciences.  Individuals will learn about the diverse careers in the field of Family and Consumer Sciences. They will learn personal income management skills, garment care and construction, selection and care of textiles used in home furnishings and fashion, the basic principles of nutrition and a study of the development and needs of the infant, through the teen years. Students will also learn a basic level of computer applications including word processing, e-mail, spreadsheet, and Internet utilization.

 

Students can choose from the following courses. Students must complete 18 hours to receive the Certificate. When students are selecting courses of interest, special attention needs to be given to when the courses are offered, ex. Spring of an odd year.

CAREER OUTLOOK

The issues of families, consumers, communities, and society have never been more important. This program provides a broad knowledge base in these areas. This program prepares students for jobs related to the needs of families and consumers.

REPRESENTATIVE POSITIONS

Fabric consultant, decorating consultant, and positions in public service agencies relating to nutrition and financial issues.
